For most people, choosing a doctor is not really something that happens. We go to the hospital, or clinic, a doctor sees us, sends us to another doctor who sends us to another doctor. We never question who were being sent to or if there are any other options.

But when it comes to something as important as cancer treatment, you are quite literally, in most cases, putting your life into the hands of the doctor you choose for treatment. When being treated for cancer, experience makes all the difference. If you are going to be treated using radiation therapy, your radiation oncologist is the expert that can literally save your life.

With the numerous advancements in radiation therapy over the past 10 years, a radiation oncologist should be well trained using latest treatment options, but you also want him to have the hands on experience of having treated others with that technology.

Checking with other cancer patients to ask them about their radiation oncologist is one way to find a good doctor. However, keep in mind that positive referrals are often the result of a patient’s personal relationship with a particular doctor, and not necessarily by knowing how a particular doctor compares to another. It is impossible to ascertain this unless a person actually makes an effort to make those comparisons, digging into a doctor’s history and training.

In short, be careful to fully study the radiation oncologist’s history and training and be sure to find one that not only has a quality “bedside manner” but also has extensive training and experience.
