Debt recovery is a challenging process that requires commitment, whether using a debt recovery firm or doing it yourself. Depending on the amount of debt you have, this is a process that can take months or years to complete.

The first thing to do to start debt recovery is to get your credit report. Go to annualcreditreport.com – it’s free, and you can get a credit report from each one of the three credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax, and Transunion) per year. It’s best to get just one credit report to start, so you can still pull credit reports twice more this year.

Once you have a good idea of your debt, make sure that the debts are valid. If you find any debts that are not yours, or contain incorrect information, you can dispute the debt. Dispute them with the credit reporting agencies and the company that holds the debt will have to verify them and provide proof that they are correct.

Once you have an idea of the debt that you have, you will need to start paying off the debt. You can attempt to settle debts for less than what you fully owe by contacting the creditor who owns the debt. Settling debts typically has a negative impact on your credit, but less of a negative impact than unpaid debts. You may even be able to settle for a “pay for delete” – paying the balance in full in exchange for having the negative information removed from your credit report entirely.
